Family, Good news! I love my new area and new companion and new district! I am learning a lot here. Consolation 2 is in the same zone as Carmen, my second area, and today we played basketball as a zone so I got to see some of the members I used to play basketball with. They remembered me so that was fun. We used to do a lot of stuff with them, even though they were in Danao area. We spent a lot of p-days there.
There are about 100 active members in my new ward. The bishop is a very nice guy. He laughs a lot. Each Saturday we have a community service project and he is always there. Then after, he works with the missionaries. That is great. Then on Sunday we brought a new investigator to church and He greeted her, we sat her down with the old relief society pres who is also her neighbor, and then the bishop welcomed her by name in sacrament meeting. That was good for her. She really liked the service.
It is different being the senior companion. I feel that the Lord has blessed me with the ability to better fill the position. The week before transfers I felt an increase in my ability to teach clearly and discern the needs of the investigators. Now that I am in my new area with Elder Plania I can see that the areas that he struggles in have become my strengths, and he definitely has strengths that I don't have. He doesn't have a lot of class and flare when he teaches, but he is so humble and has some great Christ-like attributes that I need to learn from. We are so strong as a companionship.
I hope your cruise went well mom. I’m sure it was nice to relax for a few days. I just hope you took President Uchtdorf’s advice and ate all the food that was included instead of powdered drink mix and canned beans and crackers. The buffet is much more delicious.
Sorry for emailing early, no time for you all to write. Next week. Salamat kaayo sa inyong nindot nga mga examples. I’ll give you a word for the week to practice. It is one of the hardest sounds to make for Americans. Ngit-ngit. Ask Bro Baring how to pronounce it. Good luck!
Take care! Love you all,
Elder Schenk

Dad and Eric,
Thank you so much for your emails. It is great to see how well you are doing. Dad talks about how good Eric is and Eric talks about how good Dad is and you both talked about how good conference was. I’ll be the echo from the other side of the world that you are both great! I can see improvement in both of you. Eric said that, “I really love our Dad. I can feel so much he cares about each and every one of us. It's great to have a dad like him who is so involved in just being a good guy." It’s true. You are a great guy and a great example to me, Eric, and all of the young men in the ward. You always strive to do what is right. And Dad said that, "Speaking of Eric...He played the best that I have ever seen him play. He was really playing hard and got a lot of touches on the ball. As hard as he plays he works even harder to be like his older brother which is a great priesthood holder. You can be proud of your younger brother." Keep going Eric. Become the best that you can be. Do like President Uchtdorf said and become an expert at what you do. But even more, to become an expert on the doctrine of the gospel, especially the priesthood. Knowledge is so important. The more we know, the more the Lord can use us to help others. Thanks for your good examples.
Yesterday I transferred to Consolation 2 and my new companion is Elder Plania. He is a good missionary. He has been out a little over six months and I am the senior companion. That is the first time there. It will be a good learning experience to lead again. It has been almost a year since I was a leader. He is really humble and willing to learn all he can about the gospel and apply it in his life. I think we are going to have a great transfer. Consolation is a bigger area than I was just in. It is just outside of the biggest city on Cebu. I think we are going to have a lot of success. We have some good investigators and I don’t think we will have a hard time finding more. There are a lot of people here. The Lord will lead us to them, or them to us. I am really excited to see how things turn out.
Conference was amazing! I started ranking talks from one to five so that I would know which ones to read first when they came out in the Liahona. I marked a lot of 5's, but then the talks started getting better and better. So I had some 6's and 6+'s until we hit some really good ones that ranked a 200% number 10! Needless to say, I absolutely loved conference. I realized how much more I need to be doing to become what the Lord wants me to be. And like Eric said, everyone learns and notices different things. That is the Lords way of helping each of us specifically.
Thank you both so much for all you do. I miss spending time with the two of you. Take care! Love you tons! Good work Eric on praying for missionary experiences. Don’t be afraid of the questions. They are a blessing that could one day become the biggest blessing in the life of one of your friends. Send my love to Grandma Schenk. I’m sure George is watching over her night and day, as are hosts of other angels.
Love always,
Elder Schenk

Wow today was a great week of emails! So many! Everyone wrote this week! Thanks for that, but pday is over and I only have 7 min to write. So I'll make it fast.
I was so excited to hear about General Conference. We were eating dinner at a member’s house on Sunday and he was watching General Conference on his computer, so I got to see just a tiny bit. I am super excited! And to think that I might see Eric on TV on the other side of the world is great!
Mom, hope you have a good time on your trip.
All I can think to say is just keep going. Each of you are doing well in your lives and I am so grateful to hear about all of your successes. Eric is preparing for a mission, Dad shares experiences with the Young Men, Diane is going to the temple more with Dennis, Katie is doing great with her new baby and Josh is successful too. I just love hearing how everyone is so successful. Mom just writes about how happy she is for her family. Thank you all for that. Keep going with the missionary work. Sounds like President Monson hit that one again in conference. Brother Bingham emailed asking me if I could send a short letter about missionary work for the youth conference. Everything now is about sharing the gospel, and that’s my passion. I get to do it 24 X 7. It’s AWESOME! This week I have found great strength through reading the Book of Mormon. I love to read it. If I have the time I read chapter after chapter. Sunday I think I read 5 or 6 chapters in 3 Nephi. The stories are so amazing. You begin to see how great the prophets in the Book of Mormon really are.
I think I am going to be transferring next week, but I won’t know until next Wednesday.
Love you all! Take care. Hope you all enjoyed the pictures!
Love,
Elder Schenk
Katie,
It’s good to hear from you! I haven't gotten the pictures of Eleanor yet, but knowing that they are on their way is exciting! Sounds like she is a little bundle of fun to go shopping with. Just keep going. Someday she may be changing your diapers. :)
I’m excited for Josh. Sounds like he is doing well with work and is really motivated and efficient with his time. That's awesome! When I get home I’ll have to take a trip to Wisconsin and try some of the cheese and frankfurters.
Take care! Love you,
Elder Schenk

Mom,
My apartment is good. It is new and clean and HUGE! We have one of the biggest houses of anyone in the ward, and there are only two of us. But it’s nice. The only problem is that the nozzles in the bathroom pop off every once in a while and the entire bathroom gets soaked while you try to screw it back on. Other than that, and the long walk to the downstairs bathroom in the middle of the night, I love it!
The food here has been good. We have been fed well by the members here. We usually get at least three meals per week, but lately it has been more. This week we got fed last night, and have a dinner appointment with the bishop tomorrow, dinner on Friday at the Flores family, Lunch Saturday at the Ortega Family, dinner Saturday at the Kabunkal Family, and dinner Sunday at the Weller Family. YAY FREE FOOD! We have been cooking a lot at home, and last week for the first time, we bought no canned food. That was great!
Francois, the rich guy from France is good. He wants us to come over so that he can record Elder Mera playing a song on the guitar, but the problem is he just started working every Wednesday at the temple until almost 5. Wednesday is p-day and it ends at 5. But we are going over there today at 4 to play. Hopefully he gets home early.
Our investigators are doing well, they just need to come to church. They always have things that come up that keep them from coming. We have one, Rescy, who really wants to come, but every week is either sick, or her baby is sick, or some other unavoidable unexpected problem arises. Last night we watched Finding Faith in Christ at her home. That was great. The spirit was so strong and both she and her member brother Resly were touched. We had a great discussion after which we shared some scriptures about Christ and then bore our testimonies. I loved it.
We have another investigator who is the daughter in law of an inactive family. She has had the lessons before and is super excited about the gospel. She studied her assignment and could almost quote the answers to our questions from the lesson 1 pamphlet. That was great.
Thanks for all that you all do. Sure love you!
Elder Schenk
Dad,
That’s great that you got to hear from the missionary about Elder Clark! I love that guy! We had a lot of fun together. If you get a chance to talk to him, tell him I said hi and that he needs to write me. Tell him also that I followed his advice and am not bugoy. He will be glad to hear that. He had a big impact on the way I do missionary work, even though we were only companions for a short time.
I am so glad that Eric gets to go to conference! I loved those trips. The Sunday morning session at Bishop MacKay’s mother’s house where she cooks breakfast is amazing! He's going to love it. I miss those good ol' days.
Thanks for all your encouragement dad. Sure love you! I was looking through pictures last night and saw a picture of you and Eric and Bishop Atkinson at Britney’s farewell party. I respect those three men so much. You mean so much to me. Thank you for always being the good example for me. You always held your priesthood with honor. That is a problem here. Even some of the very first members here who have been sealed in the temple would rather have the missionaries bless their families. It is so sad to see them miss out on those great experiences. If only they knew the joy that would come. You were always ready. I'm so glad that I had that great example in my life. Thank you Dad. See you in a year and 2 months!
Love you tons,
Elder Schenk
Eric,
It is so good to hear from you. You are becoming a man and not just the little kid I call my little brother, nor are you little anymore. I can see it in the way you write and in how mom and dad talk about you. I don’t read a lot in D&C so off the top of my head I don’t know. My advice would be to spend time each day in the Book of Mormon. All the standard works are important, but a prophet said we should know the Book of Mormon better than any other book. Maybe you could read a little of both. My all time favorite story in the Book of Mormon is Moroni and his time period. He was the captain of all the armies and Teancum and Helaman and Lehi were some of the other leaders. To fully understand their story you would have to read Alma 48-62, but that would take a long time. But you can read about the invisible army. Read Alma 56:56; 57:25; 58:59 about the army of Helaman and Alma 49:23 and 62:26 about the army of Moroni. Then read Alma 56:47-48; 57:20,26; and 58:40. That should excite you. Then apply it to your life. Next week I’ll give you something to read in D&C.
Keep learning in physics. You will need that knowledge if you are going to create worlds someday, And if you endure to the end you will end up with that opportunity. You will have to learn it sometime. Now is a great time. I love to learn now. Elder Mera and I spend all of our free time reading the different church books we have, treasuring up knowledge continually (D&C 84:85). I love it.
Take care buddy. Good luck in you soccer. Enjoy General Conference. I won’t get to hear it until the next week, because Saturday here is still Friday there.
Love you!

Mom,
Thank you for your letter. One of the great problems among missionaries is motivation. For two years you do the same thing every day, and have the same exact schedule every week. The only change is new people and new companions and new areas. It is so important to grasp the importance of the work. When Elder Cook was here he talked about the serious responsibility that we have here in the Cebu Philippines Mission because of the temple that is here, and that we need to take this responsibility seriously. We have been successful in this area, but really it’s not hard. The lessons and golden investigators just come. We can meet all of the standards and not even work that hard. There is so much room for improvement in my work. I need to continually keep myself focused on the work and remember to do it for the Lord. Each of the people here will eventually have the opportunity to receive the gospel. I want as many as possible to hear it from me.
We had an experience teaching an investigator last night where we asked what she had learned from her reading assignment. She taught us almost the entire lesson we were going to teach her! She had learned so much from her reading and understood it really well. After she was done I looked at Elder Mera and he looked at me and I said, well that about sums it up. We can close now. We did teach her and she did end up leaning. She really is a golden investigator. That was amazing. We also gave her a blessing last week. When she recovered from her illness she thanked us for healing her and said that if she hadn't received the blessing that she might still be sick. Her testimony is so strong, partially from watching the change the gospel has made in the life of her brother, who I was able to baptize in February.
Could you please find out the address for the California Rosevil Mission for me? I met Elder Mulleneaux in the mtc and I want to write him, but don’t have his address.
Sure love you all! Tell the third ward thank you for sending me the Valentine ’s Day package. I loved all the letters. It is good to hear from them all. The Big Brown Heart was great! And brother and Sister Wilson, those chocolates were amazing!
Love,
Elder Schenk
Eric,
Yes you go and get some dinner. It’s weird to think that you just sent this 6 min ago and I am about to have lunch on your tomorrow. It’s 11:23 AM here. I’m glad your soccer team is doing so well. Good luck! Let me know when you get that goal. I’ll be cheering for you from the Philippines.
I’m glad you are excited about your mission. You will learn so much, especially if you go foreign like me. Everything is different and the adjustment changes you into a much better person. As you come unto the Lord you can see your faults, and then have the opportunity to work on them and slowly become like Christ. Keep up the good work. Sure love you buddy!

Mom,
I am doing great here. We did have our two baptisms this last week! So success gihapon. We have another really good investigator, Rescy, who is progressing very well. She came to church this last week. She was sick yesterday and we were able to give her a blessing. I would have rather taught about repentance, but I’ll take what I can get. I’m glad you all had fun at Epic sliding down those big slidy slides and swinging on the swingy swings. It sounds like a great place to work. And I’m glad Eric had fun in the snow with Dallen.
That’s amazing that all of the missionaries are ok in Japan. It got hit really hard. Did they pull them out, or what happened? The mission president assures us that there is no radiation headed for the Philippines. That’s nice to know. I sure feel bad for all those people who lost everything and have to start all over again. It makes me really want to focus on my work so that if that ever happens here, the people will have been warned and prepared. They need the gospel now as we are close to the second coming. Joseph Smith said that they were living in the 11th hour. That was almost 200 years ago. That, to me means it’s coming fast. We need to do all we can to prepare ourselves and our families and everyone we know, and even the ones we don’t know. I try to invite 10 people to learn each week. The last 2 weeks we have had over 140 i2ls's (invite to learn) which is the mission standard, and this last week the mission had an all time high record, and average of 135 i2ls per companionship! That’s great! We also were able to teach 29 lessons last week! That is my second highest.
Tell Eric I wished him luck before his game even though he won’t know till after.
I sent you a DVD with all of my pictures on it on Monday. You should be getting it sometime in the next month.
For Easter, well I’m not a huge fan of peeps, but my companion is a huge fan of chocolate. M&M's are his favorite. I’m afraid I can’t blame him. Peanut m&ms are mine. That’s what I want.
Thanks for everything
Love you all!
Elder Schenk
Sorry dad, not a lot of hot sunny weather around here. Everyone talks about how it’s going to get hot really soon and it just doesn’t. Today it was in the 20's Celsius and rainy. The rain has let up quite a bit lately, but the heat hasn’t come on yet. I’m grateful. I don’t like sweating from sun up to sun down.
Tell Eric congratulations and that if he didn’t miss his goals that it would have been a blow out! So some advice, if they go in the net you are much happier! You should try that. I tried, and made a fool of myself, but you are much better than I was. I am content with teaching people in Visaya. I can do that alright.
Sure love you all and love hearing about your great experiences.
Love,
Elder Schenk

Dad,
Sorry I didn’t have a chance to read your email. The internet wasn’t working this morning and we have little time now. This week is going great. We have two baptisms this Saturday, our apartment is clean and I really like my companion and my area. We have some really good investigators. One has a sister who was baptized a little over a year ago who is semi active, and a brother who we just baptized last transfer. He is a really good convert and helps us teach her the lessons. When either of them talk about the gospel or Jesus Christ the spirit is really strong. Yesterday she prayed fervently that she would be able to come to church this week for the first time, amidst the temptations and trials of the devil keeping her from coming. I love teaching the gospel and I love my mission. There is nowhere else I’d rather be.
Love you all tons! Take care

Mom,
How ya'll doin' up yonder in the snowy country? I miss that white fluffy stuff. This week is transfers, and for the first time in 6 transfers, I am not going to transfer meeting because both Elder Mera and I are staying in Carcar! We just moved into a new apartment on Monday because our contract had run out in our last one and the owner wanted to do some repairs. So we got to talk the new owner through the contract and get him checks and so forth. That was interesting. Usually Zone Leaders take care of that, but they live an hour away and can’t come down to Carcar multiple times in a week. I learned a lot. Our new apartment is in an actual apartment complex and is new. The problem is that it is right on a main road and there are noisy motorcycles going by all the time. And there are lots and lots of ants that come out of the walls by the hundreds if you leave out food. We have a great bug killer that the mission provides. I don't foresee any more problems. The new apartment does have a great shower! I like that. I haven’t used a shower for almost 5 months. We just throw a bucket of water over our heads and call it good.
The work here is going great. Philip and Kesha Lana were confirmed on Sunday. We have two baptismal interviews this Saturday for Angel Diapera and her friend Jocelyn Ferando. Their baptism is scheduled for the following Saturday. Angels mom was inactive for a long time, and with the help of the ward we reactivated her two months ago. She started bringing her daughter to church (the building is less than a block away) and one Sunday they brought Jocelyn who had been taught by the missionaries before and was super enthusiastic about the gospel and wanted to be baptized. It is like a competition in our lessons between the two of them to see who knows the assignments better. They want to know more about the gospel than the other. It is great to see the work spreading here. We also have 3 other good investigators with baptismal dates, but because they haven’t been coming to church, their baptisms have been postponed. They are really good investigators though and all want to be baptized. I am excited for this next transfer!
I don’t really miss driving. Gasoline here is even more expensive than in the states. It has been over $4 for a long time.
I have just about filled up an sd card, so I’ll probably load it onto a cd. The problem in Carcar is that there are no new good machines to do it on like where Sister Robison was. She was in downtown Cebu and had the two biggest malls in the Visayas in her area. I’ll try to have a member help me out so I can send some home. Sorry, so many computers here have viruses and I don’t want to lose 9 months of pictures.
Thanks for everything. I sure love you all! Take care in Wisconsin!

Hey, Hey, A Letter Came After All!
February 24, 2011
Thanks for the email Dad, sorry I didn’t email yesterday, I we had a zone activity 30 min south and I thought we were going to email there. By the time my companion finally told me we were doing it before, it was too late, and we got home late from the really beautiful and sweet hike, so I had no time. We now have the opportunity to visit Mormon.org twice a week to get familiar with it, so I am using that time to email you, sorry it will be short. I’m glad to hear that I am missed when it comes to skiing, because I sure miss skiing! No snow here. Only volcanoes. I didn’t even know there was a volcano until sister Bailey told me that mom emailed her yesterday about it. I saw her today at zone conference. That was a really great spiritual experience. It was evident today that President Hansen is the mission president that the Lord wanted me to have and called me to. He is an amazing man! I remember when Chris Chord got off his mission we went to some amazing church meeting and I remember him just saying, "I know nothing!" over and over and over again. That’s how I felt today. President Hansen's knowledge of the gospel is so deep. He talked today for 15 min on one phrase in a 3 line verse in John. He has an immense knowledge for the gospel! I love that man!
Well I had better go. Just a quick update. My dog bite is almost healed and the dog is still alive and kicking, just hopefully not biting! Haha! We had two baptisms this last Sunday! Woohoo! And have another 5 who are really good investigators who will all probably be baptized with dates in March.
Love you all!

No Letter from Devin This Week :(
I did get this response from Elder and Sister Bailey when I emailed them today!
Good Morning Brother & Sister Schenk,
It was wonderful hearing from you again. As for the volcano, it is so far from us we didn't even know about it. All are fine here in beautiful Cebu. Today is Zone Conference and we will see Elder Schenk. We saw him a couple of weeks ago and talked to him last week. He and his companion are moving into a new house this week so I'm sure he is quite busy. Yesterday all the zones had a zone activity service project. His zone (Talisay) went to Argao which is at the Southern end of their zone for their project. I don't think any of our missionaries had a chance to email home because of it. We are very proud of our wonderful missionaries here. They really work hard and the results are reflected in the number of souls they bring to the Lord each month. You can be very proud of your son and the work he does here. He is a very hard worker and is enjoying what he is doing. When they come in for a Temple session, it is always nice to see his smiling face and he always come to the office to say hello. Well it is time to get some breakfast and head into the office. May the Lord bless you in all you do and thanks for the message.
Have a Great day.

Letter from the Baileys (Senior Missionary Couple)
February 20, 2010
Dear Family and Friends,
It has been a long time since the last update. For those of you who enjoyed them in the past, I apologize for not doing one lately and for those who didn’t like them, neener, neener.
Now that I have that off my brain here is what’s been happening here in our part of the Philippines. I say it that way because Sister Walker and Sister Cooper are up north in Bagio. Hi Sisters!!
Our beautiful temple is closed for two weeks for cleaning. Because of that, the Temple Complex has been really quiet this last week and will be next week also. We sure miss all of the patrons in and out and the visits to the mission office with their most welcome referrals. We are continuing to baptize about 100 people a month. Our missionaries work so hard and love what they are doing.
Our mission is continuing to grow. We are getting in more missionaries that we are losing and are able to open more areas. We opened two new areas since we arrived and are splitting an area in March and another in April. We are also planning to open two more areas in the very near future if we get approval. The Philippines is a great place to be right now as the Gospel is being spread throughout the country.
Some of you may be aware that on April 28, 1961, Elder Gordon B. Hinckley, then Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles dedicated the Philippines for preaching the gospel. In his prayer Elder Hinckley invoked blessings “upon the people of this land that they shall be friendly and hospitable, and kind and gracious to those who shall come here, and that many, yea Lord, we pray that there shall be many thousands who shall receive this message and be blessed thereby. … We pray that there shall be many men, faithful, good, virtuous, true men who shall join the Church.” We are preparing to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that momentous meeting and dedication.
Here is our missionary plea again. In March and April we are losing our three key senior couples, and there are no replacements in sight. If you (speaking to those not already on a mission) have had thoughts or discussions with your spouse about going on a mission, now is the time to act. The need for Senior Couples is greater than you can possibly imagine. There is no way Sister Bailey and I can fill our callings and theirs too, nor could we even try. One couple served in Bogo City at the northern end of Cebu Island, one on the Island of Bohol and the other on the Island of Negros. Sister Bailey and I cover everything from Cebu City, South and the West side of Cebu Island. Let the Lord know you are ready to serve. I’m sure there are other missions with needs the same as ours throughout the world. The work is very rewarding and the pay greater than you could ever think possible.
It has also been a while since we sent a picture of a Jeepney. Here is our Jeepney of the month for February courtesy of the Hilton Hotel, Cebu. (See file "Jeepney Feb 2011.doc")
Our prayers go out to all of you every day and we want you to know we love you and miss you. It’s hard to believe we have been on our mission for 7 months already but we certainly are not ready to leave yet. We still have 16 more months of service to give and look forward to every day of it.
May God bless all of you and may you continue to do all you can to keep the commandments that will enable you to return to you Heavenly Father when the time comes. I testify to you that I know the importance of the work we are doing for the people of the Philippines and for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know that our Savior lives and loves us and wants the best for us each day and that through His Atonement we can have eternal life.
Take care and I will try to do another update next month.
